Boston, MA, 04/09/2014 (usastockreports) – BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is not having a good time in the industry from last some years. But this time finally it has news to cheer about. The company has made a win in a patent infringement case against NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ:NXPI). Decision was given by federal jury in Florida, in a case where BlackBerry was accused by NXP for infringing three patents. NXP had filed a case in April 2012. It alleged BlackBerry for infringing the patents related with the designs of devices, and for some of the other features used in its phones and Playbook tablets. NXP is a Dutch semiconductor company.
The problem area
In 2012, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) was known as Research in Motion. At the start of the case, NXP has accused BlackBerry of infringement of six patents but then it reduced the charges and claimed the lawsuit for infringement of three patents. NXP did not specify the amount of damages. They were looking for triple damages in an infringement case.
The trial started on March 24, 2014, the charges of NXP were said to be invalid. NXP is not happy with the verdict and looking for options for further appeal. As per now, the case is given in the favor of BlackBerry.
A ray of hope
Litigation is not something new in the Smartphone industry. Now and then some global patent war can be seen among the famous companies. But this case was quite important in the case of BlackBerry. The company is already facing a tough time in the Smartphone industry. It is lost its market share to the other players in the industry. The company had already spent huge amount of money and time in fighting this case. The win is a much needed relief to the BlackBerry. With this win, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) will further hope to turn around the things in the other segments, in the industry.
