Reports are that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) plans to relaunch its Zune music service as “Xbox Music” on October 26th. The service will be available on Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 and Xbox 360 devices. Later it will be available for Android and iOS devices. Users will be able to store music from the service on Microsoft’s cloud service – SkyDrive.
Users will have a choice of free steaming supported by ads, or ad-free by paid subscription.
Rumors are also circulating that Microsoft will offer its own music streaming content. This fits with the company’s stated plans to move aggressively into devices and services. A digital music streaming company called Rdio is most often mentioned as a Microsoft acquisition target and many even say that talks are underway. So far, both companies have declined to comment.
